If you’ve spent any time in Pennsylvania wine country, chances are you know Allegro Winery from Brogue, PA, where it’s been a staple since 1980. That’s where people really came to know Allegro. In 2001, just a week before 9/11, Carl and Kris Helrich purchased the Brogue property and carried the brand forward.
Nearly two decades later, in 2020, just weeks before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, they bought the former Naylor Winery property in Stewartstown, which was originally founded in the late 1970s. Today, Brogue is home to their Cadenza Vineyards winery, while Stewartstown is where Allegro operates publicly and continues to grow. The taproom is located on the same property as the winery, at 4069 Vineyard Road, in Stewartstown, PA.
For decades, the Helrichs focused exclusively on wine. But like many in the industry, Carl will tell you that beer was always part of the story. “Honestly, I thought about adding a brewery as far back as 2005,” Carl shared. “There’s an old saying in the wine world: it takes a lot of beer to make good wine. That always stuck with me.”
That idea turned into reality with the arrival of brewer Dylan Helrich, who joined Allegro in 2021. Dylan first worked in the vineyards before catching the brewing bug, guided in part by mentorship from Emery Pajer of Scrubby’s Brewing in Red Lion. He dove headfirst into recipe development, system operations, and everything in between. By 2023, Allegro was serving beer out of the winery.

Fast forward to June 6, 2025, and the team officially opened a standalone taproom on the Stewartstown property. Housed in a renovated pavilion once used for concerts and weddings during the Naylor era, the new space blends rustic charm with modern craft energy. Guests can sip a pint beneath the trees, overlooking rolling vineyards with the woods just steps away. It’s no surprise the team leans into the hashtag #BeerInTheWoods; the setting couldn’t be more fitting.

Inside, the taproom features seating for about 60, while the expansive outdoor area can host much more. The tap lineup currently rotates through a wide variety of beers, with everything from easy-drinking lagers under 5% ABV to fan-favorite stouts like Midnight Rider.
The response has been overwhelming, Carl told us, beers are selling out as fast as they’re brewed. And to keep up, the brewery recently upgraded from a one-barrel system to a 3.5-barrel system with new fermenters, giving Dylan the ability to scale up and make more.
And while Allegro’s focus is firmly on the beer, their winery roots still remain front and center. Guests can order wine and sangria alongside the beer list, making the new taproom a great destination for just about every taste. For food, they have rotating food trucks between the winery and taproom, adding to the experience without the overhead of a full kitchen.
Between their two properties, Allegro manages 15 acres of vineyards across 51 acres in Stewartstown and 35 acres in Brogue. With a history spanning over four decades and now a brand-new taproom chapter, Allegro Winery continues to show that some of the best ideas just need time to ferment.
