From Grapes To Grains: Allegro Winery Adds Beer And Opens New Taproom In Stewartstown

If you’ve spent any time in Pennsylvania wine country, you’re probably familiar with Allegro Winery, a longtime name in Stewartstown. What you may not know is that the family behind Allegro has just expanded significantly, opening a brand-new taproom dedicated to craft beer.

The taproom is located on the same property as the winery, at 4069 Vineyard Road, in Stewartstown, PA.

For owners Carl and Kris Helrich, this move has been in the works for a long time. Allegro has been part of the Stewartstown community since the early 1980s, when it was founded by brothers John and Tim Crouch.

Carl and Kris purchased the winery in 2001, and for decades, they focused exclusively on wine. But like many in the industry, Carl told us that beer was always in the back of his mind.

“Honestly, I thought about adding a brewery as far back as 2005,” Carl shared. “There’s an old saying in the wine world: it takes a lot of beer to make good wine. That always stuck with me.”

The push finally came with the addition of brewer Dylan Miller, their son, who joined Allegro in 2021. He started with vineyard work and quickly shifted into brewing, thanks in part to his growing interest in craft beer and mentorship from Emery Pajer of Scrubby’s Brewing in Red Lion. Dylan dove in headfirst, learning everything from recipe development to system operations, and by 2023, Allegro began serving beer out of the winery.

Fast forward to June 2025, and the team officially opened a standalone taproom on the winery’s property. It’s housed in a renovated pavilion once used for concerts and weddings. The bar looks out over the vineyards, and guests can enjoy beer and wine while sitting beneath trees, with the woods just steps away.

Inside, the taproom features seating for about 60, while the expansive outdoor area can host much more. The tap lineup currently rotates through a wide variety of beers, with everything from easy-drinking lagers under 5% ABV to fan-favorite stouts like Midnight Rider.

The response has been overwhelming, Carl told us, beers are selling out as fast as they’re brewed. And to keep up, the brewery recently upgraded from a one-barrel system to a 3.5-barrel system with new fermenters, giving Dylan the ability to scale up and make more.

And while Allegro’s is firmly on the beer, their winery roots still remain front and center. Guests can order wine and sangria alongside the beer list, making the new taproom a great destination for just about every taste. For food, they have rotating food trucks between the winery and taproom, adding to the experience without the overhead of a full kitchen.

With 51 acres of vineyards, a history stretching back over four decades, and now a brand-new taproom, Allegro Winery and Brewery has got it all!
