Using Over 3,000 Pounds Of Fresh Pumpkin Tröegs Prepares For It’s Annual Release

One of Pennsylvania’s most popular pumpkin craft beers has begun the process to make its triumphant return in 2023. Tröegs “Master Of Pumpkins” will soon be flowing through Pennsylvania draft lines.

And with most pumpkin beers already on the shelf, you may be asking yourself why it hasn’t released yet. You’ll find the answer to that lies in the quality and attention given to this beer year after year.

Every year, when pumpkin beer season arrives, the Central PA brewery brews Master of Pumpkins with 3,000 pounds of fresh Pennsylvania longnecks grown just 10 miles from the brewery.

It takes a long time to plant, raise, pick, slice, clean and roast all those longnecks, but if you ask us, Master of Pumpkins is worth the wait” the brewery says about the process.

“To us, a pumpkin beer should have pumpkin,” says brewmaster John Trogner. “We’re a Pennsylvania brewery, and pumpkins grow really well here, so using Pennsylvania pumpkins just makes sense. Tröegs lovers definitely appreciate the connection to local agriculture.”

Early in the year, when the frost permits, the brewery’s friends at Strites’ Orchard outside Hershey plant a whole field of Pennsylvania longneck pumpkins just to be used in this beer. Longnecks are a hearty heirloom variety that taste similar to butternut squash and can weigh up to 20 pounds each.

Then, in late August or early September, the ripe pumpkins are delivered, and their kitchen team swings into action, de-stemming and roasting each one of these crooked beauties right in their Snack Bar kitchen. The end result is a freshly made Pumpkin beer that showcases the flavor profile of real live pumpkin without any of the artificial flavoring you may get in other beers.

Look for Master of Pumpkins in 16-oz. cans and on draft at the brewery and everywhere their beer is sold soon.
