Welcome to our “Meet The Brewer” series! Where we interview brewers in Pennsylvania, from breweries small to large. Let us know if you know anyone who should be featured, email us at info@breweriesinpa.com.
Pilger Ruh Brewing first opened its doors in July of 2021 at 213 N Centre Street in Pottsville, PA. The brewery expanded in 2023 with a second taproom and beer garden at 110 Chambersburg St Rear in Gettysburg. Pilger Ruh began in the summer of 2017, when owners Tyler Budwash and Anthony Deppen, along with friends, started homebrewing together. They joined the beer festival circuit and received great reviews from consumers all over the state. This propelled them towards the commercial side of brewing.
Alyssa Gunsch is the head brewer and co-owner at Pilger Ruh Brewing. Read more to find out her introduction to craft beer, where she sees the craft beer industry heading, and more!

What was your introduction to craft beer?
My introduction to craft beer was Breaker Brewing Company. Growing up in the Poconos it was one of my favorite breweries to go to. I loved going when they would put out their firkins and experiencing the unique flavor combinations. They instantly had me intrigued.. which started my fascination with craft beer.
How did you get started as a brewer?
Right place, right time. I was dating Tyler one of the owners at Pilger Ruh.. When I volunteered to help the temporary brewer at the time. I ended up becoming his assistant brewer for 9 months and was thrown in head first when he took an offer at another company.
What style allows you to be the most creative, and why?
Sours are where I get to flex my creativity the most. My background in craft cocktails and deep understanding of flavor pairings allows me to treat each sour like a layered, drinkable experience.

What was the first beer you ever brewed, and what did you learn from it?
The first beer I ever brewed was a Hazy IPA. I’ve learned SO SO much since then.
Where do you see the craft beer industry heading in the next few years?
I see the craft beer industry becoming more lager forward and more approachable beers. I believe consumers are becoming more interested in going to a location for their experience more so than just for the beers.
Describe what it’s like to be a brewer in Pennsylvania.
It’s pretty inspiring brewing in Pennsylvania.. just a few blocks away from where it all began. Yuengling laid the foundation, and now we get to build on it, with new energy and creativity.

What is the inspiration behind your beer names?
The majority of the inspiration behind the beer names we have are TV shows, wrestling, or something that has happened IRL.
What is your favorite beer to drink right now?
My favorite beer to drink right now is BRUME our Farmhouse Hazy IPA.
What is the most important lesson you learned in the beer industry so far?
The most valuable lesson I’ve learned is to never stop learning. There’s always more to discover. Beyond the science, brewing is about intention. You’re making something that carries meaning, an emotion, and passion. I truly believe people can taste that kind of love and intention you put into it.
