Rumor: Blue Ball Brewing To Take Over Black Forest Location

The Ephrata craft beer landscape is preparing for a significant transition as the community bids a fond farewell to a local staple and welcomes a fresh face to the neighborhood. Black Forest Brewery, a cornerstone of the Lancaster County brewing scene for over a decade, is officially closing its doors. However, the taps at 301 West Main Street won’t stay dry for long, as it is rumored that Blue Ball Brewing Company will be the successor to take over the historic space.

Nothing has officially been announced by either brands, but according to a search on the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board license database Blue Ball has a pending license set for the same address as Black Forest.

Founded in December 2014 by Bob and Denise Harter, Black Forest Brewery carved out a unique niche in the Pennsylvania beer world. Operating on a 4-barrel system, the brewery was renowned for its strict adherence to the Reinheitsgebot (the German Purity Law of 1516) which mandates that beer only be brewed using water, hops, barley, and yeast.

Located on the same historic property as the 1777 Americana Inn Bed & Breakfast, the brewery became more than just a place to grab a pint; it was a destination that blended local history with authentic brewing tradition. For ten years, the Harters provided a cozy “tavern ale” atmosphere, often hosting community events and navigating the challenges of the industry including a brief expansion into the New Main Theater with a dedicated local following.

As Black Forest prepares to sign off, Blue Ball Brewing Company is stepping up to the plate. While the name may be new to the physical storefront in Ephrata, the team behind Blue Ball Brewing has been hard at work building their brand and community presence.

Currently operating an active online shop and building anticipation through social media, Blue Ball Brewing’s mission is centered around three pillars: “Good Beer, Good Food, Good People.” Their move into the West Main Street location represents a major milestone for the company as they transition from a brand-in-development to a brick-and-mortar destination.

Fans can expect a fresh energy at the site. While Black Forest was deeply rooted in traditional German styles, Blue Ball Brewing has expressed a commitment to creating an approachable, high-quality experience that honors the community spirit already established at the property.

The transition of the space at 301 West Main Street is a “passing of the torch” between two passionate local entities. For fans of the 1777 Americana Inn, the presence of an on-site brewery remains a significant draw for the property, ensuring that guests and locals alike can still enjoy fresh, locally crafted beer in a historic setting.

Blue Ball Brewing is currently in the planning and development stages for the new space. While an official opening date has yet to be announced, the brewery is already engaging with the community for feedback and offering a first look at their brand through their online storefront.

For the residents of Ephrata, it is a bittersweet moment. While the departure of Black Forest Brewery marks the end of an era for German-style purity brewing in the borough, the arrival of Blue Ball Brewing promises a vibrant new chapter for one of the town’s most beloved social hubs. Stay tuned for further announcements as Blue Ball Brewing prepares to pour its first official pints in its new home.
