With the recent changes to the Untappd app and platform, will Untappd continue to dominate as a drink rating application or dwindle in popularity among craft beer drinkers?
Since Untappd was released to the public in October 2010, craft beer drinkers have gone wild for it. Checking in every pour, every can, every sip that they could. Rating, commenting, and searching for the next beer they wanted to try.
Jump forward 15 years to October 2025, and Untappd has now added options for: Non-Alcoholic, Ready-To-Drink, Sake, Spirit, THC-based Drink, and Wine. It is important to note, you can turn these options off in the app…for now.
In recent years, it seems as though its popularity has been waning. Conversations we have had with beer drinkers, and especially owners, have painted a picture of getting away from the platform. Beer drinkers say they can’t trust everyone’s rating, and owners dislike the possibility that their product could receive low ratings and negatively impact sales. Not to mention the constant increase in prices for those breweries that use the platform in their taproom, many have opted for other options instead.
With these changes, do you think Untappd will continue to dominate as a drink rating app? Or will its original adopters, who made it uber popular, the craft beer drinkers, leave for another app?
