Pittsburgh has found itself in yet another top category for beer. Earlier this year the city was named the best beer city in the country. According to a national report, the Steel City also ranks as the number one drunkest city in Pennsylvania.
24/7WallSt, a financial news and opinion company, analyzed the percentage of men and women over the age of 18 who reported heavy or binge-drinking in each state’s metropolitan areas. Then singled out the city or metropolitan area with the highest rate.
According to the report 23% of adults in Pittsburgh stated that they drink excessively. Statewide, Pennsylvania came in at the 10th highest at 20.7%. The 23% response rate put Pittsburgh as the overall top metropolitan area in the state and top 5 metro area in the entire country.
In addition to these percentages, Pittsburgh found itself as one of the most populous city on the list. At 2.3 million residents, Pittsburgh’s population was the second largest metro area behind Baltimore at 2.8 million.
This shouldn’t come as a surprise as there is no shortage of breweries in the Pittsburgh area. When you look at the breakdown of breweries by county in Pennsylvania, Allegheny (where Pittsburgh resides) comes in at number one overall. With more than 60 breweries calling Pittsburgh home, the options to enjoy draft beer seem endless.
While Pittsburgh residents clearly have a reputation for enjoying beer, not all of it results in good fun. The report also found that driving deaths involving alcohol in Pittsburgh came in at 28.4%. Which is a higher average as compared to the statewide rate of 25.4%.
