East End Businesses Collaborate to Help Each Other Stay Afloat During COVID Slowdown

Small businesses in Pittsburgh’s East End are responding to the ongoing challenges of operating during COVID with camaraderie and creativity. A collaborative of five local favorites — East End Brewing, Prohibition Pastries, Commonplace Coffee, Kelly’s Bar & Lounge, and Barmy Soda Co. — announced today the launch of “Survival Kits.” This six-week subscription features the crusty hand pies, hoppy ales, aromatic beans, fizzy beverages, and other delicious items customers love.

“Survival Kits” are the innovative solution of locally-made goods designed to help any household survive their week. At the same time, these subscriptions provide a vital revenue stream to local businesses when they need it most.

“We were inspired by the model of weekly farm box subscription for CSA’s (Community Supported Agriculture). But instead of produce, Survival Kits will be filled with baked goods, craft beer, freshly roasted coffee beans, soda pop, and more,” says Eliza Bowman of Prohibition Pastries.

Customers are invited to purchase a 6-week “Survival Kit” subscription which includes something from each of the five participating businesses. The selections from each producer will vary from week to week, based on seasonality and demand. Depending upon the popularity of the first 6-week subscription season, the small business collaboration is hoping to follow up with subsequent subscription blocks.

“We’re so excited to work with our fellow East End neighbors and colleagues,” says Scott Smith of East End Brewing, which will serve as the pickup location for these weekly subscription boxes. “Without a doubt, this Survival Kit partnership speaks to the ingenuity and supportive spirit of our East End small business community.”

The East Enders “Survival Kit” subscriptions are available on the East End Brewing website. Pickups will be organized every Wednesday at the brewery 147 Julius St. address during regular hours from 3-7 pm. The first pick up will be on September 16, 2020. Masks and social distancing protocols are required at pickup.
