Leading Beer Scientist to Speak Twice in Indiana, PA

Levity Brewing in Indiana, PA has teamed up with IUP and St. Francis Universities to bring one of the brightest scientific minds in craft beer to town. Kelly Tretter is the Senior Quality Integration Manager for New Belgium Brewery in Fort Collins, CO and she will be visiting Levity the first week of April. Anyone who would like a chance to hear Kelly’s story has two great opportunities. One on Monday, April 4th, and the other Wednesday, April the 6th.

On Monday 4/4, Kelly will present the keynote address at IUP’s Research Appreciation Week by discussing her journey as a female scientist in a male-dominated field. Monday’s events at the Kovalchick Center start at noon, and Tretter’s keynote address begins at 1:15 pm. IUP has made all the week’s events free and open to the public.

Her second talk will take place Wednesday evening at 6:00 pm at Levity Brewing Co. This event will get deeper into the microscopic world of beer with a talk entitled “The Science and Magic of Sour Beers”. Kelly and her team of scientist-brewers are part of the reason New Belgium brewery became one of the largest and most respected in the country. The public can purchase tickets through Levity’s website, and it comes with a flight of four specially selected beers.

Head Brewer at Levity, Jared Herman, a biology teacher in his previous career, met Kelly after a talk at a national craft beer conference. “Kelly got up there and blew us away with a deep understanding of yeast management and she communicated it in a way everyone could follow. She’s also one of the most fun and energetic scientists I know. Definitely someone you’d want to have a beer with!”

On Tuesday, between these Indiana events, Kelly will speak with students at St. Francis University in Loretto and to community leaders at St. Francis’ new branch campus in Downtown Altoona located in the newly renovated Curry Innovation Center. St. Francis’ Fermentation Science Program co-sponsors that event with the Curry Innovation Center and Levity Brewing.
