If you follow PA craft beer closely, you definitely heard of (and tried) the “Pointing North” collab from Levante Brewing and New Trail Brewing this past November. It was so popular, it won the “best collab” category in our Breweries In PA 2020 Readers Choice Awards.
Due to the popularity, the two breweries are back at it for their second collab, aptly named “Pointing South”, a 10.2% Triple IPA, with a release planned for Thursday, February 4th.
The name is of course a play off of the first collab, Pointing North. But the two breweries also went a step further on the word “South” with the use of 2 South African Hops – Southern Sublime and Southern Passion (more details on these two below). They then blended these with Strata and Mosaic. And finally, to take the collab to the next level, the team chose to go with a Triple IPA.
This new beer will be on draft at Levante’s Stables and made available through Levante’s shipping program Mercury, shipping to anywhere within the state of PA. New Trail will also have a limited amount of cans for sale at their taproom.
The Southern Hops
Southern Passion is a South African bred, aroma daylight neutral, hop whose pedigree is a diploid seedling originating from Saaz and Hallertauer crossing. The aroma profile includes passion fruit, guava, red berries, melon, black currant, coconut, tangerine, grapefruit, and calendula – unique. It works well with a variety of beer styles including lightly hopped session beers, and all hop-forward beers of American and Belgian origins, such as pale ales, IPAs, and saisons.
Southern Sublime has an aroma of Kool-Aid, Juicy Fruit, citrus, mango, plums, dank, and pungent. It works well with intensely hop-forward beers like modern IPAs.
