Mystic Ways Brewing has introduced “Mystic Hop Mates”, a new way of pouring their beers over whole-leaf hops.
Mystic Hop Mates (pronounced Mah Tays) is a drink inspired by Yerba Mate, which is an herbal drink in South America. Yerba Mate is made with Yerba leaves inside of a gourd and drank through a filtered straw called a bombilla.
Mystic Ways’ interpretation of this is to take hops, a bombilla, and then pour beer over the hops, usually about 3-4 8oz pours to get the most flavor out of the hops. The brewery gives the customer a selection of hops to choose from, and the flavor additions they usually bring to the beer.
So far, most people have chosen an IPA for this, however, they’ve experimented with all different beer styles, and that’s where the hop mates get fun. Mystic Ways’ personal favorites are light lagers and stouts with the Hop Mates.
Mates are traditionally a social drink, so the brewery encourages people to bring friends. Groups below 4 can order a 50oz beer tower and those above 4 get a 100oz beer tower.

Right now Mystic Ways is only offering Mystic Hop Mates once a month, but they plan on offering this more in the future.
The next date to try these hop mates will be April 16th, reservations are required for 12pm, 3pm, and 6pm. Head to their site to make reservations.
