After a decade of operations in the Pennsylvania craft beer industry, the owners of Sobel’s Obscure Brewery have officially announced that they are placing the business up for sale. The decision comes as part of a retirement transition for Dave Sobel, who is looking to step away from the industry after a long career.

The ownership group emphasized that the brewery is not closing. Operations will continue as normal throughout the transition period, with no immediate timeline established for a change in ownership. The brewery, located in downtown Jeannette, is being offered as a “complete turnkey business”. As detailed in the social media post.

The business has evolved significantly since its inception, growing from a small brewing and distribution operation to a full-scale taproom established four years ago. The current facility, located at 500 Clay Avenue, occupies the historic Gillespie Building, which dates back to 1904. Originally serving as a prominent department store, the site was meticulously renovated by the Sobel family to support an 18,000-square-foot facility. This expansive space features original architectural details, including preserved tin ceilings and hardwood flooring, and currently houses a 7BBL brewhouse.

Over the last ten years, Sobel’s Obscure Brewery has become a fixture in the local Jeannette business district, hosting events such as trivia nights, concert series, and food truck gatherings. In the announcement the owners noted that they are proud of the brewery’s contribution to the ongoing revitalization efforts within the city of Jeannette and remain committed to finding a successor who will keep the space a vital part of the community.
