Dead Canary Brewing Opens As The First Brewery In Philipsburg, PA Since The Early 1900’s

A brewery will finally call Philipsburg, PA home for the first time since the early 1900’s. The Dead Canary Brewing Company opens its doors on Saturday, October 29th in the restored Hoffer Building at 5 North Front Street.

The 1,500+ square feet space has been renovated by majority business partners Brent Baskin and Eric Kelmenson to offer the area a unique setting for handmade craft beer. Brett, who will lead the brewing operation, has been homebrewing for over 8 years and was most recently at Otto’s Brewing Company before setting out on this venture. All beer will be produced on the 2.5 barrel nano brew system and poured through the five draft lines and one Angram Beer Engine. Almost all fermentation will be done with Norweigen (Kviek) yeast.

The name Dead Canary comes from the history of Philipsburg itself. An old mining town, Dead Canary plays on the fact that the town fell out of favor with much larger cities becoming more accessible as new roads were developed. Canary’s are also a historic part of the mining industry. The brewery is a part of the revitalization coming to the town.

As Brett confirmed with us, he enjoys more classic styles of beer, but Dead Canary will carry a wide variety of styles for guests to enjoy. With their flagship beer being their Canary Cream Ale. While the brewery won’t offer its own food, guests will be treated to a variety of food trucks as well as the ability to bring their own food in at times.

What makes Dead Canary most unique is the historic look found inside the taproom. Kelmenson, who owns a local construction company, sourced many of the items found inside. While much of the look may seem random, the unique decor comes from the fact that a lot of the furniture comes from other buildings throughout town.

As of this writing, the official opening of the space is Saturday, October 29th. To start the brewery will be open from 5:00 – 10:00 PM on Fridays and Saturdays. As they continue to operate the space they plan to add to the hours.
