Highwater Hefeweizen from Neshaminy Creek Brewing Co. is a hefeweizen with 5.2% ABV. Hefeweizens are German wheat beers that are distinguished by being unfiltered with noticeable flavors of banana with a spice accent.
Highwater lives up to this billing as it pours to a golden wheat color with a good deal of haziness and earthy spiced notes on the nose. First sips reveal a very pronounced wheat flavor and a spiciness very reminiscent of fresh cracked black pepper.
This spicy boldness comes from it being brewed with Tettnang, a German hop strain known for its spiciness. Neshaminy’s goal was to make as authentic a weiz as possible and this shows from their usage of another classically German hop, Hallertau.
Tangy and bold with a good amount of carbonation, it works well as an alternative to the session IPA. It won’t knock you down with a high ABV, it’s refreshing without being too mild of a flavor and doesn’t have the thickness that a stout may have.
