Brewery Review: Levity Brewing Company (Indiana, PA)

Levity Brewing is the creation of longtime homebrewers Jared Herman, Erich Walls, and Luke McKelvy. Located in an old Gorell window factory in downtown Indiana, PA, they are Indiana’s first brewery since 1939. Construction started on the brewery in 2015, and after a lot of planning, they officially opened in January 2016. You may also recognize them as the winner of our 2018 March Madness tournament.

Levity offers a 10 barrel brewhouse with three 10 bbl fermenters and one 20 bbl fermenter. Additionally they have four 10 bbl brite tank and one 20 bbl brite tank. During our visit the taproom was buzzing with excitement as people sat down to enjoy one of the 18 beers (yes…..18!) on tap as well as the delicious food menu. It was obvious to us that this is a normal day at the brewery.

During our visit we enjoyed a flight of a variety of their great beer.

Drinks

Pictured left to right:

• Spel Czech5.8% Pilsner – A beautiful blend of classic malt character balanced by heaps of old world hops. Clean and quenching with a soft mouthfeel.

• Tenured9.3% Double IPA – India Pale Ales hold an enduring spot at the head of the Craft Beer faculty. This is Levity’s tribute. Somewhat crazy, definitely dry, a little bitter, but always brilliant.

• Ghost Trail Gose – 4% Gose

• Haze Frehley 6.7% IPA – See for yourself if this IPA is worthy of its own category. It’s extremely dry but you can’t tell by its silky texture. It drinks like a fresh glass of grapefruit juice.

While each beer was as delicious as the next, the experience wasn’t complete without the food. We have said this many times before; craft breweries are offering a full dining experience and Levity is no exception. They offer over 20 items on the menu from starters, entrees to desserts! A trip to Levity will allow everyone in the party to walk away satisfied whether they are a craft beer aficionado or not. See the menu for yourself.

While the inside of the brewery buzzes, the outside can be just as fun as well. Since they are an old manufacturing plant they are on a very large plot of land. It is because of this space that they are able to host their annual Summer festival every year. The 2018 version just passed, but be on the look out for 2019, it is sure to be a good time!

The beer and food aren’t the only good coming out of this brewery. Levity has also done numerous charitable events throughout the year to support veterans through Red, White, and Blue. They support the local Humane Society and another local pet rescue organization called Four Footed Friends. Their Hoodlebug Brown Ale is named for the Rails-to-Trails trail that runs directly beside their brewery.

We highly recommend a stop into Levity Brewing. You can find them on Wayne Avenue in Indiana. Make sure to tell Luke, Jared and Erich that we said hi. And of course feel free to check out their (very well deserved) hardware:
