Brewery Review: Moss Mill Brewing (Huntingdon Valley, PA)

Moss Mill’s original garage system that gave the Delaware Valley their first taste of MMBC beer at various festivals

Their story began 9 years ago when Nick began homebrewing with a kitchen setup. His homebrewing advanced to their basement and next to the garage, with appearances pouring samples of his beers at local beer festivals, 7 years of brewing and lab experience at Philadelphia’s Yards Brewing Company alongside his creative outlet. Through his homebrewing and professional experience, Nick felt the need to push the boundaries a bit and explore other options. While handcrafting traditional styles that taste great is great practice, Rodgers was also interested in seeing what else could be done, what different hops could impart on a tried and true recipe and thus is why Moss Mill are dedicated to their craft; creating small batches, collaborating with their patrons and club members and are exploring options in their 3bbl brewhouse.

Step inside the brewery and you’ll notice this place is very intimate, seating around 40 guests and filling 12 taps with small batch, handcrafted beers. Of those are 5 core beers; their Moss Mill Lager, a crisp and clean American light lager, Indecent Proposal, an IPA brewed with Mosaic and Centennial, Buck Rd Wheat, an American Pale Wheat Ale, Bremen Ave Brown, a brown ale boasting with chocolate notes, and New Standard, an American stout with generous dosing of roastiness and chocolate notes.

Along with the core beers, you’ll find an array of different styles, some of which have been curated alongside their Collaborators Club, which allows their members to have a say on how the beers are made and lets them experiment alongside the brewer, creating a more interactive experience in their brewery. In addition to their Collaborator Club, those members also have exclusive access to those beers when they are tapped.

In addition to brewing and serving beers, Moss Mill also hosts quarterly homebrew competitions to inspire the next generation of brewers to keep the scene alive and thriving. They also host Sunday School, where they teach their patrons about off flavors and provide more insight into just what goes into making the perfect pint of beer. This goes alongside their dedication to creating an interactive experience amongst their patrons.

Moss Mill doesn’t stop at just creating an interactive and entertaining brewery experience, but they are also dedicated to quality. With Nick’s experience at Yards Brewing in their lab, it only made sense to create their own to study yeast cultures and to test the quality and efficiency of their brews.

Moss Mill are dedicated to providing a different experience for their patrons, one where they can interact with the brewer to help craft a beer, learn more about the science of beer, participate in homebrew contests, and just simply be a part of something. Their taproom is intimate and perfect to incubate some great small batch beers through imaginative patrons and club members. Step inside the brewery and remind yourself where some of those big breweries come from, and get that interactive experience that most of them lack.
