Meet The Brewer: Kyle Kalanick of Marleys Brewery

Welcome to our “Meet The Brewer” series! Where we interview brewers in Pennsylvania, from breweries small to large. Let us know if you know anyone who should be featured, email us at [email protected].

Marleys Brewery first opened in February of 2011 at 1323 Columbia Boulevard, in Bloomsburg, PA. The brewery originally operated out of the historic Hotel Magee building and then moved just a mile away for a larger space on Route 11. This allowed the brewery to expand and offer an extensive food menu, as well as 14 rotating and seasonal taps.

Kyle Kalanick is the head brewer at Marleys Brewery. Read more to find out his introduction to craft beer, where he sees the craft beer industry heading, and more!

What was your introduction to craft beer?

One Guy Brewing had just opened in my hometown of Berwick. I started going there to visit a friend who was tending bar and ended up falling in love with the beers.

How did you get started as a brewer?

I started out pouring beers at One Guy and was offered a brewing position as it was growing and changing into Berwick Brewing where I worked for 7 years.

What style allows you to be the most creative, and why?

I’d say one of the best things about today’s industry is people are willing to try anything so you are really only limited by your imagination.

What was the first beer you ever brewed, and what did you learn from it?

I believe my first brew was a Hefeweizen. I learned you can’t clean enough, every little detail matters, and that I had a lot more to learn.

Where do you see the craft beer industry heading in the next few years?

I’m rooting for crisp, clean beers to continue the momentum they seem to be regaining.

Describe what it’s like to be a brewer in Pennsylvania.

It is an honor and a privilege. Pennsylvania has a rich brewing history and is still producing some of the best beers in the country.

What is the inspiration behind your beer names?

I tend to find a local or personal connection to the style or country of origin, but I couldn’t help name one after my lab, Hank.

What is your favorite beer to drink right now?

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.

What is the most important lesson you learned in the beer industry so far?

Never get too comfortable, always keep learning. Fads will burn out as fast as they started, the classics are here to stay. Keep an open mind but stay true to yourself.
