Funk Brewing has teamed up with the Ben Hines Foundation to create “Sneaky Walnut”, a beer brewed for a fallen marine.
The beer is out now at Funk’s Elizabethtown location and is perfect for this Memorial Day weekend.
We recently spoke with Wendy Hines, Ben’s mom and the President of The Ben Hines Foundation, to learn more about Ben and this beer collaboration. Below is what she told us:
SSgt. Benjamin Hines was the most patriotic Marine you could ever meet. During his teenage years, his gaming name was sneaky walnut. As an adult, his favorite beverage was a Lager.
He was known for wearing his “American” outfit whenever possible, which was the inspiration for the jacket, tie, and shorts on the squirrel caricature. His sense of humor was infectious, he always put others’ needs first, and he made everyone feel welcome and respected.
On April 8th, 2019, Ben was KIA in Afghanistan. We started the Ben Hines Memorial Foundation later that year to continue his legacy of giving by offering educational scholarships for students of military and first responder families and support to our Fallen Heroes families.
Creating a Lager beer that incorporated so many aspects of Ben seemed to be a perfect way to honor him. We were introduced to the team at Funk’s, who immediately became champions in bringing this beer to life.
