Ah the IPA, it is quickly becoming the most common form of beer new craft beer drinkers are pursuing. Even within the style there is the hop forward West Coast-style with its strong hoppy bitterness, then there are more balanced offerings where a malt forward sweetness is the dominating flavor. Below are the top 5 ranked IPAs within the state of Pennsylvania according to Beer Advocate.
So let’s look at the list…
Topping the list is Albatross by one of Pittsburgh’s favorite Brew Gentlemen. Beer & Brewing Magazine calls this beer a “quintessential example of the New England–style imperial IPA. Soft, juicy, and hoppy to no end. Rich, chewy, and interesting from the first sniff through the final swallow. Everything comes together well.”
Coming in at the 2nd most popular IPA in Pennsylvania, Foshomo by Brew Gentleman, an 8.2% Double IPA. “Great beer throughout with tasty tropical fruit flavors. It is rich, and it packs a punch, but in such a nice fruity way. For a big beer, it finishes surprisingly light making it dangerously drinkable. If there is a classic New England–style IIPA, this is it!” says Beer & Brewing Magazine
Finding itself as the number 3 IPA in Pennsylvania, Double Milkshake IPA – EXTRA Vanilla by Tired Hands Brewing Company out of Ardmore, PA. This 9.2% IPA is a part of the ever popular Milkshake series of IPA’s produced by the brewery. Brewed with oats and lactose sugar. Conditioned on twice the amount of Madagascar vanilla beans as Extra Vanilla Milkshake.
Another Brew Gentlemen favorite, Mammoth comes in at number 4. This 8.5% Double IPA is made with a blend of American hops. With a flavor profile of intense mandarin orange, pineapple and mango flavors.
Another favorite from Tired Hands Brewing Company, Extra Extra Knuckle, a Double IPA brewed at 8.6%, enters the list at number 5. This beer is brewed with a bit of fluffy malted wheat and hopped exclusively with beautiful and vibrant 2017 Mosaic. Notes of passion fruit, mango nectar, jellied strawberry, ripe honeydew, and mandarin orange.
