Tröegs Brewing Awarded PA Grant For New Carbon Capture Effort

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) awarded nearly $3.5 million to a second round of industrial manufacturing projects across Pennsylvania that focus on reducing industrial emissions and improving air quality – and those projects will save Pennsylvania companies over $470,000 in energy costs as part of the Reducing Industrial Sector Emissions in Pennsylvania (RISE PA) Small-scale Award Track (SAT) grant program.

“Pennsylvania has a long industrial history, and these RISE PA grants are going to help manufacturers build their business with lower energy costs, the creation of more energy-focused jobs, and reduction of air pollution for surrounding communities,” said DEP Secretary Jessica Shirley. “This program offers tailored grants to increase energy efficiency, use renewable energy, and help reduce or eliminate pollution, while also continuing to support our economy and position Pennsylvania as an energy and industrial leader.”

The SAT represents one component of the RISE PA grant program, a $396 million statewide industrial decarbonization grant program funded through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Climate Pollution Reduction Grants. RISE PA offers grants for small-, medium-, and large-scale decarbonization projects at industrial facilities by investing in emissions reduction equipment and energy-efficient upgrades.

The first year of project implementation activities for this round of SAT grants are expected to prevent approximately 2,500 metric tons of greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere. This is the greenhouse gas equivalent of 575 gasoline-powered passenger vehicles driven for one year; the equivalent to greenhouse gas emissions avoided by 209,447 trash bags of waste recycled instead of landfilled; and the amount of carbon sequestered by 40,741 tree seedlings grown for 10 years. Companies will save an estimated $470,000 on energy costs in the first year of the projects.

The Pennsylvania Technical Assistance Program (PennTAP) at Penn State manages the $40 million SAT program through the RISE PA initiative and helps manufacturers with a no-cost energy assessment. The SAT program is designed to help manufacturers identify project opportunities to lower operational costs, reduce environmental impacts, and create high-quality jobs within the surrounding communities.

This is the second round of SAT grants being awarded; the first round was announced on April 1, 2026. Additional funding rounds are planned through 2029.

Tröegs Carbon Capture Project

Dauphin County:

Tröegs Brewing Company, $204,284. Install a Carbon dioxide reclamation system within their existing facility to capture CO2 from the fermentation process and reuse in later stages of beverage production. This will reduce the amount of CO2 that the facility purchases for their production process. Annual Estimated Energy Savings: $53,416.
