A Familiar Pittsburgh Face Is Now Brewing At Coughlin’s Law

One of Pittsburgh’s most experienced brewers has quietly joined one of the city’s most underrated brewery restaurants, and chances are, most craft beer fans don’t even know it yet.

During a recent conversation with the team at Coughlin’s Law Kitchen and Brew Pub, one thing became abundantly clear: they’re confident in where the brewery is headed. Now, the challenge isn’t making better beer, it’s making sure more people discover it.

About four months ago, Chris Carr took over as head brewer at Coughlin’s Law Brewing, bringing with him more than a decade of experience brewing across the Pittsburgh craft beer scene. If his name sounds familiar, it should.

Carr’s brewing journey has taken him through some of Pittsburgh’s most recognizable breweries, including Church Brew Works, Aurochs Brewing, Helicon Brewing, Brew Gentlemen, and Abstract Realm. We also previously featured him as part of our Meet The Brewer series.

Along the way, he’s earned a reputation for producing everything from crisp lagers and hop-forward IPAs to creative seasonal releases and fruited sour specialty beers. Now he’s bringing that same attention to detail and brewing philosophy to Coughlin’s Law.

The result? A brewery that’s quietly turning heads with a lineup that’s becoming harder and harder to overlook.

“We’ve had people tell us we have some of the best beer they’ve had all year,” owner Frank Vetere told us. “The biggest challenge right now is simply getting more people through the doors to try it.”

A Restaurant First…That Happens to Brew Excellent Beer

While many breweries eventually add a kitchen, Coughlin’s Law took the opposite approach.

The original Mount Washington location opened in 2018 as a restaurant known for its elevated American cuisine, handcrafted cocktails, and a welcoming atmosphere. In March 2024, the team expanded into the North Hills with a second location that added a full production brewery while keeping that same restaurant-first philosophy.

The menu goes well beyond typical brewery fare, featuring wood-fired pizzas, smoked wings, handcrafted burgers, and the restaurant’s popular Crab Rangoon Nachos. Pair that with an extensive cocktail program, house-brewed beer, and rotating Pittsburgh guest taps, and it’s easy to see why many visitors come for dinner and end up staying for another round.

The North Hills Brewery

The Mount Nebo Pointe location is home to the brewery and offers one of the area’s best all-around craft beer experiences. Guests can enjoy nearly 20 house beers brewed on-site, a rotating lineup of local guest taps, a spacious indoor dining room, an outdoor patio, and plenty of seating for groups.

Carr’s goal has been simple: brew a wide variety of high-quality beers. Whether you’re looking for crisp lagers, hop-forward IPAs, fruited sours, or seasonal specialties, there’s usually something new pouring, with many beers also available in 16-ounce cans to-go.

The Original Mount Washington Location

The original Mount Washington restaurant remains a favorite destination for locals and visitors exploring one of Pittsburgh’s most iconic neighborhoods.

The location serves the same elevated menu alongside Coughlin’s Law beers, local guest taps, handcrafted cocktails, and an extensive bourbon selection, making it just as appealing for dinner as it is for grabbing a pint after taking in the city views.

A Brewery Worth Visiting

Carr’s arrival marks an exciting new chapter for Coughlin’s Law Brewing.

With one of Pittsburgh’s most respected brewers leading the brewing program, excellent food at both locations, and a growing lineup of house-made beers, the brewery is quietly building a reputation that’s well worth paying attention to.
