Brewery Review: Newfangled Brew Works (Harrisburg)

One of Harrisburg’s newest breweries can be found in a brand new, 12,000 square foot building on Union Station Blvd. Newfangled Brew Works has only been in existence since late November of 2018, but the brewery and all they offer is a sight to be seen. (And as you’ll see…. they have a lot to offer).

Recently we visited and sat down with the man behind Newfangled, head brewer Adam Cole, to learn more about what makes this brewery so unique. Having spent 8 years in the commercial brewing space at Appalachian Brewing Company as well as Victory Beer Adam comes with the resume and brewing reputation that beer drinkers of all tastes can put their trust in.

While the brewery has much to offer, as you’ll see later, what stood out the most from our visit was how proud Adam was to source and build this brewery through American companies. A majority of what you will find in this location, from the brew tanks, to the serving stations and just about every other piece of equipment has been manufactured here in the states. Something Adam was quick to point out, and we sensed was very proud of, as he should be.

Newfangled operates a 15 bbl brew house with four 40 bbl fermenters. While the tap room was up and running, during our visit the brew system was still being built out. The expectation is for the brew house to be fully functional shortly. But lucky for us Newfangled did have one of their beers on tap. The other 19 taps were filled with beer from all over the state; many from the central PA region. As Adam shared with us it was very important for him to highlight the other breweries in the area while they were still preparing to release their full tap list. Breweries such as St. Boniface, Ever Grain, and many other locals filled the menu.

During our visit we enjoyed the Newfangled American Wheat. This 5% traditional wheat beer was as crisp and clean as a beer can be made these days. With such a smooth, yet rich flavor profile it is no surprise that the 15 bbl system at the brewery will be working overtime to keep up with customer demand.

We have driven thousands of miles across the state of Pennsylvania. And the one thing that becomes more obvious to us is how much breweries in Pennsylvania are offering guests a complete dining package. And Newfangled is no exception. We highly recommend you visit with your group of friends or family; beer drinkers or not. With an offering of wine, spirits and non-alcoholic drinks this location is sure to please the variety of palettes in your group.

But it doesn’t stop at the liquid. Newfangled also offers a menu to round out your dining experience. This brewery takes Taco Tuesday to a whole new level with their own built in taco truck! That’s right, situated in the corner of the brewery you will find their very own taco stand just waiting for you to enjoy.

The menu is prepared by the head chef, Christian DeLutis, of Koda (more on them in a minute).  The truck offers 5 variety of tacos, sides, and more! Rounding out the experience is the Jack & Jill ice cream stand you see being offered as well.

The brewery offers space for 150 seats in the taproom, allowing them plenty of room for live entertainment as well as a private event space for 35 for more intimate settings. And coming soon will be a 2,400 square foot patio! See inside this large brewery from our visit just before they opened for the day:

But wait…. there’s more! We mentioned earlier how Koda prepares the menu for the taco truck, right? Koda is the 90 seat restaurant inside the brewery! That’s right, Newfangled hosts it’s own upscale restaurant as well. While being inside the brewery, they have done an excellent job of making it feel like a completely new dining experience while still being under the same roof. You walk through a hallway past the brew house and you are inside the restaurant.

Koda offers more of an upscale dining experience. Newfangled has done an excellent job offering two completely different experiences all within the same building. See how Koda differs

At Newfangled you will find an experience that fits any and all needs. They are kid friendly; offering games, high chairs, food and non-alcoholic drinks. While also producing clean beer that the most hardened craft beer fan will appreciate. The Taco Truck and Koda restaurant round out the complete dining experience.

We highly recommend a visit to Newfangled at their brewery on Union Station Blvd to see all of this for yourself. In the meantime feel free to check them out on Facebook and Instagram to stay up to date as they continue to grow!
