The first alcohol establishment in almost 100 years will open in Roaring Spring, PA. Spring Dam Brewery Company is planning to officially open on Thursday, January 21st at 269 East Main Street. The brewery will be open Wednesdays through Sundays from 5:00 – 8:00 PM specifically for growler fills.
The town voted in 2019 to repeal an ordinance banning the sale of alcohol within the borough, paving the way for alcohol businesses to open. Nearly every town near them is still dry.
Named after the spring dam where they get their water source from, Spring Dam Brewery will be 20’s themed with a “Speakeasy vibe” as we are told, complete with a red velvet room. They will have their own brewed beer, coffee, and a food menu for beer fans.
Originally, Spring Dam wanted to have coffee in the same building. Plans have changed and they will be opening a coffee shop with baked goods in the building next door sometime in 2021.
We spoke with co-owner Dane Noel to find out more about the space and what beer fans can expect of the first brewery in the area.
BIPA: What styles of beers will you focus on?
Dane Noel: We will have a variety of styles for beer fans. Definitely a Kolsch and Saison, we will be making hazy IPA’s and some coffee stouts, as well as wheat beers and some lagers. Beer fans can expect something for everyone on the taps.
In addition to beers, we will be making our own craft sodas. We will have 10 taps for everything, and two will be soda.
BIPA: Can you describe the space you are opening. Is there a history of the building?
We are opening in a build that was built in 1873 and was the first building ever in Roaring Spring. It was originally a tack shop, then changed hands a few times, and most recently was a newsstand/general store. That closed in 1994 and has been vacant since.
We will be operating on the first floor, the other two floors are apartments, and will be creating an outdoor beer garden as well that is around 1,800 sq/ft.
Also, we are using a 3 bbl system with six 3 bbl fermenters to brew on.
BIPA: Will you release crowlers/cans there as well?
Dane Noel: We will be doing growlers to start, and crowlers in the future. We are also considering filling 16oz cans once we are open for some time.
BIPA: Will there be food offered?
Dane Noel: Yes, we will have a small kitchen producing some great finger foods, think “shareable foods” – pub pretzels, nachos, sliders, dessert items. Mac and cheese.
