State Of The Craft Beer Industry In The United States

Much of what we do showcases the thriving craft beer scene in Pennsylvania. However, it is always good to know how the industry is doing as a whole. Thanks to our recent visit to the 2019 Craft Brewers Conference hosted by the Brewers Association, we were able to get a first hand look at how the industry is performing.

Below are highlights of how the craft beer industry performed over the last year.

• The industry added 7 million more craft drinkers

• Industry grew 4% over the previous year (matching the 4% growth from 2016 – 2017, the lowest growth since 2008)

• 1 million barrels added (6 year low)

• 219 breweries closed in 2018 (all time high over the last 4 years)

• 1,049 breweries opened in 2018

• 3.1 million barrels sold (all time high in 4 years)

• Sales Growth:

• 13% Increase in barrel sales in Brewpubs

• 16% Increase in barrel sales in Micro Breweries

• 40.2% Increase in barrel sales in Taprooms

It’s our opinion that what the numbers show is craft brewery growth has steadied out. With the number of breweries closing as well as industry growth both being at all time low’s it suggests that brewery growth is flat. However sales have increased. What that suggests to us is that more consumers are choosing craft versus the macro options.

Overall it’s our belief that while some craft beer statistics may have flattened out, the industry is still in a very good place. More consumers are choosing to drink craft, which can only benefit all those involved in the industry.
