Ulster Breakfast Stout is a stout with 7.1% ABV from Lavery Brewing Co. in Erie, Pennsylvania.
Ulster pours to a dark brown, chocolate color with a thin, slightly lighter brown head that dissolves into a fine ring at the top of the glass. The aroma is strong, primarily of roasted coffee and darker chocolate with some sweeter notes of malt.
This stout’s flavor is very in line with cold brew coffee, the organic coffee used in brewing really shines through in a roasted, darker flavor. Combined with the oats and milk sugar there’s also a very smooth, creamy texture that does invoke the morning after cream infused coffee feeling.
Lavery walks a nice line with Ulster Breakfast Stout that is higher in ABV, but is far from an imperial. This is a craft beer that is smooth, velvety with plenty of rich robust flavors of chocolate malts and coffee. For coffee fans, beer lovers in and out of Pennsylvania should be tracking down this stout.
