Berwick Brewing Set To Reopen Under New Ownership

Just over a year ago Berwick Brewing announced it’s closure, and now it would appear as if there is life once again on Front Street in Berwick. The brewery recently posted on social media the announcement, accompanied by screenshots of an article with more details, that new ownership has taken over the reigns and will “continue growing something that has already become such a success and an important part of the Berwick community.”

As some may recall, after decades of unwavering dedication to the craft and the local community, owner and seasoned brewer Tom Clark announced his plans to retire. He placed the beloved Berwick Brewing Company, the oldest operating brewery in Columbia and Montour counties, on the market for $1.8 million. It marked what many feared was the definitive end of an era for a regional staple known for its classic German-style lagers, unpretentious charm, and stunning riverside views.

Unfortunately, the road to retirement proved difficult. Although half the area seemingly dreamed of taking over the historic property, finding the right buyer with the right funding was a challenge. After three separate sales fell through, Clark made the difficult decision to reluctantly close the brewery’s doors on July 15, 2025.

In a heartwarming twist of fate, a local family has purchased the business and is aggressively restarting production. The new owners are none other than Megan Welch, a former kitchen manager at the brewery, and her husband, Vaughn Welch. Megan had actually been one of those locals dreaming of owning the brewery years ago but lacked the capital at the time. However, after a recent data center project purchased her family’s property, the funds materialized, and the dream suddenly became a reality.

The Welches are deeply committed to honoring the incredible legacy that Clark built over the years. Housed inside a sprawling, 14,000-square-foot historic building that originally served as the old Vaughn’s Bakery, the brewery has long combined a historic warehouse aesthetic with a welcoming, blue-collar atmosphere. To ensure the beer maintains the exact high standards locals fell in love with, the couple has rehired Clark’s former head brewer, Matt Hallowell. Hallowell is currently teaching Vaughn the intricate art of brewing, and Clark himself plans to stay on as an adviser for the first few months.

As the report states, the new family-led team is aiming for a grand reopening by July 31st. Because they are building their beer inventory entirely from scratch, the initial tap list will be smaller, but patrons can rest assured that classic staples are coming back. Favorites like Berwick Lager, Front Street Wheat, Dry Hop IPA, Irish Red, and Grumpy Bill’s Porter will find their way back into glasses. In a nod to the building’s rich history, they also plan to brew Vaughn’s Cream Ale, named directly after the bakery that once occupied the space.

Beyond the brews, the legendary food lineup is making a triumphant return. Locals will once again be able to feast on the brewery’s signature thin-crust pizzas, which famously sold upwards of 300 pies a day during the establishment’s final weeks. The weekend menus will feature comforting pub grub additions like fried cheese curds and poutine. Fans can also look forward to the return of the traditional Oktoberfest celebration in September, packed with seasonal German foods, live bands, and the iconic stein-holding contest.

Above all, the Welches say they plan to maintain the family-friendly environment that made Berwick Brewing a second home for so many. They plan to reopen the spectacular outdoor beer garden, which offers unmatched views overlooking the Susquehanna River and the Berwick-Nescopeck Bridge. Plans are already in motion to expand the outdoor footprint with games and play equipment to entertain children while parents relax.

It is incredibly rare for a closed community treasure to get a second chance at life with its original spirit entirely intact. Thanks to a dedicated local family and the blessing of its founding brewer, Berwick Brewing Company is ready for its next great round.
