Doll’s Eye CDA is a cascadian dark ale or black indian pale ale with 5.2% ABV from the aptly named Conshohocken Brewing Co. In addition to their taproom and main brewing operation in Conshohocken the Conshy crew also has a brand new brewpub in Bridgeport, PA.
This variation on the traditional IPA pours to an expectant deep, dark brown with a lighter brown colored head that dissolves slowly while leaving noticeable lacing on the glass. Doll’s Eye’s aroma is subtle with plenty of roasted malt and only a hint of floral, piny hop notes.
First sips bring more roasted malt sweetness as this brew proves its style and separation from the standard American pale ale. Medium bodied and only lightly carbonated this ale coats the tongue well, enveloping it with bready sweetness before giving way to more traditional hop bitterness.
Fans of IPAs will need to give this CDA a try as there’s plenty of the bitter, piny and floral notes you’d expect from a pale ale, but with a more overtly balanced malt profile.
