Festbier is an Oktoberfest or Marzen-style beer with 5.6% ABV and runs as a fall seasonal found in 12 oz. bottles from Victory Brewing Co. Originating in the Bavarian region of Germany this style of lager is traditionally known for it’s medium body and malty, sweeter flavor profile.
True to the style this lager pours to a brown, almost copper color with a light brown head that releases an aroma that’s a combination of roasted malts, caramel and some nuttiness. Not overly sweet there are big notes of wheat and bready flavor, only a hint of toffee-like sweetness comes through.
The finish doesn’t leave much lingering flavor other than perhaps a bit of roasted character, particularly wheat and some notes of coffee. As a marzen should be, this brew goes down smooth with little to no hoppy bitterness, just a crisp, clean finish.
This mixture of easy drinking and a very even flavor make it a true representation of the style, if not a little unremarkable. Festbier is a perfect introduction for someone new to the Oktoberfest scene that wants to try the style without getting too fancy.
