Straub Doppelbock from Straub Brewing Co.

Straub Doppelbock is a doppelbock, a German-style strong lager with 7.0% ABV from Straub Brewing Co. located in St. Mary’s, PA. Straub ranks as one of the oldest breweries in all of the country, founded in 1872, while still being owned and operated by its founding family.

Doppelbock pours to a deep, chestnut brown with a dense, foamy khaki colored head that slowly dissolves. There are strong aromatic notes of caramel, toffee, but primarily roasted malts, very much like a fresh baked dessert coming out of the oven.

Full bodied and smooth this brew sticks to your tongue, coating it in caramel sweetness that lingers through the finish. Its warmth and body make this suitable to a slightly warmer temperature. The higher the temperature the beer is poured at the more its toasted malt and rich toffee flavors come out.

Imperial stouts and bourbon barrel aged porters tend to highlight the winter months for beer pairing, but the doppelbock is another underrated option. Straub’s doppelbock pairs well with a hearty chili or a beef stew.
