Hater’s Tears from Pizza Boy Brewing Co.

Hater’s Tears is a gose with 5.4% ABV from the Enola, PA based Al’s of Hampden, better known as Pizza Boy Brewing Co. Pizza Boy continues to produce some of the highest quality ales, gose’s in particular, in the state. While they have come under some fire for the prices of their limited releases, the release of this titular brew shows how they feel about the “haters.”

Pouring to a golden yellow color with some haze its pillowy white head quickly dissolves leaving almost no lacing behind. Fresh out of the can or on tap there’s an aroma of moderate mineral from the salt, some fruity sourness and a touch of yeast. A couple sips into this gose and the reason for its name becomes very apparent as the style’s staple tartness is met with a distinct saltiness.

Lightly carbonated there is plenty of tart flavor to pucker lips and a dry finish that leaves a lingering funk on the tongue. Not necessarily a beginner’s gose, Hater’s Tears is an excellent representation of the style for those willing to try something new. Our only advice is if you don’t like the brew, or its price tag, to go forth and try to find something better, because it may take you some time.
