After nearly six years in Pittsburgh’s Strip District, Helltown Brewing will close its Penn Avenue taproom at the end of August, as the property prepares for redevelopment.
In a social media announcement, the brewery said its final day at 1700 Penn Ave. will be August 30th.
“After many memorable years serving the Strip District community, Helltown Brewing has made the difficult decision to close its taproom at 1700 Penn Avenue,” the brewery wrote. “The property…is expected to be redeveloped into a new residential project, bringing this chapter of our history to a close.”
The Strip District location opened in 2020 as part of the mixed-use 1700 Penn development, giving Helltown a major presence in Pittsburgh with a spacious taproom, outdoor seating, and regular live entertainment.
The good news for Helltown fans is that the closure only affects the Strip District location. The brewery will continue operating its taprooms in Export, Mt. Pleasant, Houston, and Butler, while maintaining beer distribution throughout Pennsylvania, Maryland, and West Virginia.
Before closing, Helltown plans to continue hosting live music and events through August. The brewery also hinted that it isn’t done with more Pittsburgh locations just yet.
“Keep your eyes open as we look to settle into another Pittsburgh location.”
Founded in 2011 in Mt. Pleasant, Helltown Brewing has grown into one of Western PA’s largest craft breweries, producing beers like Buffy Hazy IPA, Mischievous Brown Ale, and Hell’s Delight American Lager. While this chapter in the Strip District is coming to an end, it appears Helltown is already looking ahead to its next home in the city.
