Forest & Main Brewing Company (Ambler, PA) recently released Malurus, a saison that was brewed in collaboration with California-based brewery Modern Times Beer. Another brew in the long line of Forest & Main’s saison flavor experimentations, Malurus was fermented and aged in several different barrels, during which it rested on hibiscus and Carmenere grape skins. As a result, Malurus pours a purplish-red color with a quickly receding head. During the brew, the beer also passed through smashed Himalayan salt lamps and burning white sage.
A Facebook post from F&M called the collaboration “perhaps the best brew day ever.” Daniel Endicott, F&M co-owner and brewer (as well as artist) explained, “Andrew from Modern Times wanted to make a beer based on one of my paintings, so from the start it was a very experimental beer. We had a blast on the actual brew day, smashing salt lamps and burning sage.”
F&M describes the 6% ABV beer – in F&M’s unique style – “a funky purple ale, a trippy Lambrusco, or the memories of a great day.” Malurus is a limited release in 750ml bottles, with about 400 available for $22 per bottle at their brewpub.
