Old Bartholomew from Yards Brewing Co.

by Nick Andrews

Review.yards.OldeBartholomew.ChineseTakeOutOlde Bartholomew, a seasonal barleywine from Yards Brewing Company, located in Philadelphia with 10.3% ABV is named after Major General Joseph Bartholomew, an almost mythical figure from the American Revolution. Just like Bartholomew himself, this beer is legendary.

Barleywine can often be overwhelming, even sour to the point of being bitter. However, Bartholomew has oak undertones mixing nicely with sweet and sour aroma. The golden amber color looks enticing and rich with hints of orange from the barley. The head is spicy bubbly head and hits the tip of the tongue hard while the barley provides a remarkable smooth finish.

The oak and barley higher ABV drink paired extremely well with Chinese take-out from Chinatown in Philly. Other pairing options worth consideration include mediterranean, Mexican or some spicy snack, such as chickpeas. Olde Bart is likely gone for the year, but he should be back when the weather gets cold.
