Troegenator is a double bock with 8.2% ABV from Tröegs Brewing Company. Double Bocks or doppelbocks are the imperial, higher alcohol version of bocks, which are distinguished by their sweet flavor and minimal hop profile.
Troegenator pours to a dark, almost copper color with a beige slow dissolving head that gives off aromatic notes of caramel, dark chocolate and roasted malts. These notes are to be expected given Tröegs use of a combination of Chocolate, Munich and Pilsner malts.
The sweet aroma carries into first sips where there is a robust caramel flavor with only a trace of hoppy bitterness. Brewed with German Northern Brewer, a mild, less bitter hop and Magnum, a very bitter hop this double bock comes in at an appropriately low 25 IBU.
This lager finishes with that same hint of bitterness and a sweetness that sticks to the tongue, leaving a gummy candy-like mouthfeel in between sips. It is this caramel flavor and high ABV that makes this beer pair well with spicy foods to counteract some of that heat, but is also substantial enough to be enjoyed alone.
