Wicked Philthy from Sole Artisan Ales and Jack’s Abby

Wicked Philthy is an IPL or Indian Pale Lager with 7% ABV from Sole Artisan Ales and Jack’s Abby out of Framingham, MA. It’s been a big year so far for Sole with their coming taproom, release of the Sole Society membership program on top having this collaboration with Jack’s Abby as well as their team up with Evil Twin.

Philthy pours to a golden, slightly amber color with a thinner, bubbly head that dissipates quickly. The aroma is full of noble hops that bring a pine infused freshness alongside lighter scents of caramel malt.

An unfamiliar style to say the least this brew is meant to take the smoother, humble sweetness of a lager and throw in a bit of IPA bite. With that mission in mind the Sole and Jack’s Abby team have created a beer that should please both lager and IPA fans alike. There’s definitely a hop forward tinge towards citrus and a bit of grassiness to go with some malty sweetness through the middle.

Ultimately the pale ale flavors come through a bit more with its defined hop profile and bitter finish, but with enough caramel smoothness in between that won’t leave traditional lager fans out in the cold.
