Brewery Review: Urban Village Brewing (Philadelphia, PA)

The more breweries that begin to open in Pennsylvania the more we find they have to offer. And Urban Village Brewing is no exception to this rule. Located in the Northern Liberties section of Philadelphia at 1001 North 2nd Street Urban Village is one of the newest breweries to enter the great craft beer scene Philly is cultivating.

During our visit we toured the location with General Manager Tom Revell to learn more about what makes Urban Village so unique. Their ability to bring hand crafted beer together with a full kitchen menu has resulted in one of the areas top breweries for a night out with family or a cool hang out spot with friends to try their latest offerings.

With a buzzing restaurant like interior, coupled with outdoor seating, Urban Village is the perfect spot to spend hours laughing and enjoying time together all while enjoying a hand crafted menu.

This 7 bbl brewing system is like none we have ever seen before. The folks at Urban Village took advantage of every inch of space they had in their brew house. They even double stacked their tanks!

During our time there we tried the following beers:

• 2nd Street: 4.8% American Blonde | crisp, light american blonde. easy drinking with citrus notes
CPA: 5.9% American Pale Ale | single hopped with citra hops and lots of them!
Huntingdon Drive: 6.5% IPA | Citra, Simcoe, and Amarillo give this IPA its bold flavor and aroma
Electric Mayehm: 6.5% English Bitter | British-style pub ale with a deep amber color, a touch of caramelization, additions of elder flower and ginger
Micro Colossus: 4.4% Kölsch | This is a collaboration with the Brewing Sciences program at University of the Sciences in Phialdelphia. Brewed with Enigma hops from Australia that provide flavors of white wine, berry and tropical fruit

They were also kind enough to give us a taste of their latest limited release. Called Dime Piece (due to it’s 10% ABV). They aged this quad in new liberty whiskey barrels for three months. The aroma gives up a hearty, yeasty spice character of cinnamon, fig, toasted malt and caramelized candy sugar. flavor notes of candied orange, vanilla and charred peach.

We can assure you this beer is worth trying if you can. You’d never know you’re drinking a quad!

Of course when you come to a brewery you come for the beer, but the food should not be missed at Urban Village either. As their website says; “executive chef Chris Davis uses naturally leavened dough in the form of a fresh, finished pizza sourced with local ingredients. Chris draws inspiration for other menu items based on a simple philosophy of pairing good fresh food with freshly brewed beer”.

Their menu boasts hand made pizza (out of their very own pizza oven!) along with sandwhiches, salads, starters, soups, hand cut fries and so much more! They offer a brunch, gluten free, dessert and kids menu as well.

The kitchen was buzzing during our visit:

Urban Village truly is the place where anyone and everyone in your group will walk away satisfied. Whether they are there to try the latest beer offerings Philadelphia has or a meal to satisfy their hunger. There is something for everyone! See their complete menu for yourself.

We personally recommend the Chicken BLT Pita with the hand cut fries:

While Urban Village is still a new kid on the block, that has not stopped them from making a big impact on the thriving (and growing) Philadelphia beer scene. While their location in Northern Liberties has a lot to offer, we also suggest you try some of their beer on the go.

That’s right, they have also gotten into canning their beer as well. Check out our review on their Paper Trail IPA.
