Coconut Porter is, to no one’s surprise, their standard porter with coconut added to it with an ABV of 5.2% from Crystal Ball Brewing Co. out of West York, PA.
This porter pours to a pitch black color with just a thin, khaki colored head that quickly dissolves leaving some lacing on the glass in its wake. The aroma is nice, not too sweet with a lovely roasted malt scent with hints of coconut that smell like fresh dried coconut, not an artificial scent.
The porter half of this brew leads the way with a roasty, bitter malt flavor up front with some coffee notes and more dark chocolate as it warms. Coconut is definitely present throughout, but it serves primarily as an accent, just rounding out the flavor and never tries to steal the show with too much sweetness.
Craft beer fans of the very popular Death by Coconut from Oskar Blues or Manayunk’s Coconut Crunch Porter have another classic coconut infused beverage to add to the old beer fridge. Its lower ABV and medium to light body mean that Coconut Porter can be easily enjoyed in pairs and as a dessert beer without it filling you up too much further.
