Brewery Review: Love City Brewing (Philadelphia, PA)

Written By Breweries In PA Contributor Shane Fisher (@Sfish521 & @GoofyFootedBrewingCO)

Love City Brewing Company has officially been open for a month now! Located at 1023 Hamilton Street in Philadelphia, PA, Love City is just one block away from their neighbors Roy-Pitz Barrel House and five blocks from legendary Yards Brewing Company, who have been supporters since their start. With these three being in such close quarters, we definitely suggest making a brewery crawl out of your visit!

We had the opportunity to meet with owners Kevin and Melissa Walter to check out the space (which was still in the early stages of construction) and provide a preview of Love City last October. When we first walked in at their grand opening on April, 19th, needless to say we were stunned at how the space has transformed into a beautiful and cozy brewery. The space features a dart board, vinyl record jukebox, lounge area, picnic tables, a large U-shaped bar and occasional sporting events are shown at night on their projector screen. Along with all of these amenities, their staff are the true shining stars and make your feel warm and welcome, and wanting to go back again and again.

As for their beers, Love City features three year-round offerings: Love City Lager, a crisp and easy drinking golden lager, Unity IPA, a crushable IPA with citrus and tropical notes, and Generator Wheat, with gentle fruit and spicing notes that are perfect for everyday. Along with these beers, Kevin and his team of brewers offer a variety of seasonal offerings, including one tap that benefits a local organization. Their inaugural beer in this series is their Pathways Pilsner, a clean and crisp pilsner that benefits Philadelphia’s Pathways to Housing, who serve to transform individual lives by ending homelessness and supporting recovery for people with disabilities.

If you’re wondering what to eat during your visit, the brewery hosts food trucks from Thursday-Sunday and encourage ordering from local eateries Monday-Wednesday or ordering their modest menu of bar snacks that pair well with their beers. (Their $5 bottomless bar snacks of pretzels, popcorn and nuts are my personal favorite).

If you’re a big fan of their beer and want to go back again and again, you can join their Mug Club! The $40 membership fee gets you access to special events, year-round discounts on beer, an exclusive Love City mug, T-Shirt, patch, stickers, and more as the Mug Club grows.

The heart of Love City’s operation

Stop out to the brewery Monday-Friday from 4-6 for happy hour where a pint of everything on tap is just $4! If you’re unable to make it for happy hour, don’t worry, the brewery is open from 4pm til 12am Monday-Friday and 12pm-12am on Saturday and Sunday. Be sure to stop in before a show at Union Transfer, as the brewery is directly behind the venue and is perfect for pre-show antics.

Stay tuned for more on Love City Brewing Company, including beer releases, event information and updates! See you there! Visit them at their brewery on Hamilton Street and stay up to date with them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
