Groundhog Altbier is a German-style altbier with 5.4% ABV available as a winter seasonal from Straub Brewing Co. out of St. Mary’s, PA.
Pouring to a reddish amber color there’s a slight off white head that gives of an aroma of copper, caramel and some lightly roasted malts. This ale is malt forward when drinking, without too much sweetness and a solid dose of grassy, earthy flavor.
Groundhog finishes with bitter notes, that while substantial, do not last long on the tongue as this beer only a medium to light body. A crisp finish, aided by a relatively high amount of carbonation make this a quite drinkable beer that doesn’t leave much residual bitterness in between sips.
Overall, this is the definition of an easy drinking beer, its moderate flavors and clean finish allow for several to be downed while watching the game, cleaning the house or watching the kids tear through their Christmas presents.
